Thanks for the tip. But since I'm very lazy, now that I have something that works, I probably won't switch. :-)

Also, a built-in editor is of no use to me, because I'm validating local web services, not files.

You might also like Tart http://www.illumit.com/tart a standalone xhtml, css, atom and rss validator. Tart also includes a built in editor so you correct problems without switching apps.

Ah, I was looking for how to do this a week or two ago!

I ended up trying to run "rake test:units" inside of "ruby -rdebug", and that doesn't work at all: it raised some weird exception that looked completely irrelevant. Somebody on #seattle.rb said it was possible but not easy, so I gave up on it.

Howdy. Yeah, I probably looked at ack when I was looking for similar projects, before starting rbgrep. And recursive search, .svn ignoring, and highlighting are all nice features (which rbgrep either has, or has planned). But in the end, the killer feature, for me, is having a tool that understands Ruby syntax.

Plus I've tried a few times to learn Perl and I can never seem to wrap my brain around it.

Also consider <a href="http://search.cpan.org/dist/ack/ack" rel="nofollow">ack</a>, a Perl based alternative to grep. I find it cool because it:

Doesn't search through .svn files
Does recursive searches by default
Highlights (in orange!) the query... with line number

In any case, I'll be anxious to see how your tool develops.
